How to Choose a Male Dog

Some people believe that male dogs are more aggressive than females. Female dogs are born with the instinct to protect their young and can be, in given situations, territorial and protective. In fact, male dogs can often be more affectionate than female dogs. The situation that brings out aggressive behavior in the male dog is when he is near a female dog in season or an unaltered male. If your male dog is neutered at 6 months old, he will not react to this.

Instructions

    • 1

Stand in the center of the room and call to the dog. Does he come to you or ignore you? Choose the dog who responds to your voice and is interested in you.

    • 2

Sit on the floor with the dog and see how he responds to having his ears and head handled. Try getting him to roll over on his back to have his tummy scratched. Can you hold your hand on his chest while he is on his back? If you can,it is a sign of a submissive dog which is desirable. A good choice in a male dog is one that accepts you as leader of his pack.

Ask if the dog is food aggressive. You want a dog who is not going to challenge you if you take his food dish away.

    • 4

Neuter your male puppy at the age of 6 months. In most cases, this will prevent the dog from developing the behavior of marking his territory by urinating inside the house.
