Army Vet Micro Chip Policy

The decision to microchip a dog or cat is up to the owner. If the dogs or cats are housed in on-post housing on an Army base, there are regulations owners must adhere to.
  1. Microchips

    • Microchips are available for a reduced fee, usually around $20 plus the $2 office visit charge as of 2010, at Army Veterinary Treatment Facilities. Pets housed in on-post housing are not required to be microchipped, but the owners must register the pets with the base's VTF within 10 days of moving into on-post housing.

    Health Standards for Microchips

    • The pet must be up to date on all shots, including Rabies vaccinations unless living in a Rabies-free zone such as Hawaii. Records are reviewed by the vet implanting the microchip if the pet was seen by another veterinarian.

    Adoptions

    • The pet is also scanned to ensure there is no pre-existing microchip, such as with an adopted pet. If the pet has been microchipped in the past, the Army veterinarian can submit information or provide the owner with contact information to change the animal's microchip notification information.
