Basics
-
In comparing electronic fences, begin with the basics, such as brands, costs and what features are included in the price. Consider the size of the system in regard to the dogs' size because some may be too large for a small- to medium-sized dog.
Wires/Boundaries
-
Wire is usually copper and double twisted. Choose a system that has lightning protection, is completely waterproof and has an alarm system should the wire be severed. Check the actual boundary size of the kit. Most contain 500 feet of wire and 50 flags. More wire can be added if needed.
Collar/Transmitter
-
The collar should be waterproof. Check if it has multiple frequencies to progressively correct the dog as it gets closer and closer to the boundaries. Batteries should be rechargeable, and replacement parts need to be accessible.
