List of Dogs for Allergy & Asthma Sufferers

If you suffer from dog allergies or asthma but your children want a four-legged friend, there are some breeds you might tolerate better than others. Some dogs shed less than others; though you likely aren't allergic to dog hair, you might be allergic to dander and all the allergens that collect on dog hair.
  1. American Hairless Terrior

    • This breed has no hair, so there are no shedding or dander issues, but you must remember sunscreen and clothing to protect them outdoors. The American Hairless Terrier is often a good breed for people whose allergies and asthma act up around bichons, poodles, Wheaton terriers and Yorkies. This dog has the same body type as a medium-build rat terrier. It makes a good family pet and is typically good with children. Hairless terriers need at least 30 minutes of exercise every day to stay happy and healthy.

    The Chinese Crested

    • The Chinese crested is bald, except for a poof of hair on its head, feet and tail. This little dog rarely weighs more than 10 lbs. and is not a barker. It also doesn't require a large yard, so makes a good apartment dog. Chinese crested dogs make good family pets, but must be handled carefully, as they have no fur to protect them against scratches. These dogs are active indoors, but still need a daily walk.

    The Peruvian Inca Orchid

    • The Peruvian Inca orchid is a delicate medium-sized dog that's prone to bad teeth and skin. This is a sight hound and needs a tall fence if allowed off-leash. It needs daily walks or it gets anxious but gets along well with family and other dogs.

    Soft-Coated Wheaton Terriers

    • Soft-coated Wheaton terriers make great family dogs. They have a soft coat but do not shed much. The American Kennel Club states that this is a good breed for people with allergies. These dogs are friendly and smart but need a lot of grooming. Wheaton's can grow up to about 20 inches and weigh up to 45 lbs. They need daily exercise and lots of attention. These dogs do well with children and other dogs but are known to jump, so fences and training are recommended.

    Poodles

    • According to the American Kennel Club, this breed's "hypoallergenic coat may reduce allergic reactions, but requires regular professional grooming." The poodle comes in three different sizes: toy, miniature and standard, so you can find a poodle to fit any home. Poodles can be very shy or snappy, so it is best to socialize them with people and other dogs from a very young age. They are extremely active and very smart. Poodles often do well in obedience classes and enjoy learning new tricks.
