How to Take Care of a Doberman Dog

Doberman pinschers are fierce-looking dogs that are native to Germany and were bred to be guard dogs. Dobermans are known for being intelligent and loyal as well as being aggressive. Most aggression has been bred out of the dogs through diligent breeding, leaving the Dobermans less threatening and more of a family pet. They require a good deal of exercise and attention and are more prone to health problems than some other dog breeds.

Instructions

    • 1

Keep your Doberman indoors or securely contained outdoors when you are not at home to supervise.

    • 2

Feed a high-quality dry dog food each day. Food needs to be meat based, preferably with lamb or chicken. Avoid feeding table scraps since these may cause obesity and other problems. Feed the amount of dry food recommended on the packaging for your dog's weight, and be sure to choose age-specific food such as puppy food for a dog under a year old.

    • 3

Keep fresh water available at all times. Insufficient water could quickly lead to dehydration, especially in hot weather.

    • 4

Exercise the Doberman several times daily. Dobermans are an active breed and need long walks or a large area to run. A game of fetch or a jog with a human is something a Doberman will enjoy.

    • 5

Brush the coat with a soft-bristled brush weekly to remove dirt and loose hair. Cut the nails carefully with a guillotine-style clipper right above the curve of the nail when needed.

    • 6

Bathe in warm water with a gentle dog shampoo when necessary. Brushing the coat before bathing will lessen loose hairs in your tub drain.
