What Causes Puppies to Urinate Frequently?

Anyone who has ever raised a puppy knows that they urinate frequently. There are several reasons that puppies use the bathroom more often than adult dogs. The most important thing is for puppy owners to be patient. Puppies can't help needing to urinate so often, so don't punish them if they have an accident inside. Remember to take them out frequently.
  1. Muscles

    • Puppies lack the muscle tone to "hold it" that adult dogs, people and other animals have. Puppies don't develop this muscle tone until they are about 12 weeks old. That's why when puppies need to urinate, they simply go. Puppies typically urinate about six times per day.

    Size

    • Puppies are small and have small bladders. That means that their bladders fill more quickly than those of adult dogs. Because a puppy can't control his bladder, when it becomes full, he must go.

    Excitement

    • Because puppies can't control their bladders, they often will urinate when they get excited. Puppies don't realize that they are urinating when they are excited, so don't punish them for this. Simply try to control the mess by taking them outside when you get home or introduce them to someone new.
