Identification
-
Telling the difference between an "S" hook used for a pet tag and an "O" hook is pretty simple. The "S" hook is a piece of metal that literally is shaped like an "S," whereas an "O" hook is a complete circle and looks like a ring. Both are made of metal, which tends to be more durable than plastic and are less likely to break off or get lost during activity.
Function
-
"S" hooks are pretty simple to use. In fact, they are a probably a little easier to use than an "O" tag. One side of the "S" hook clips on to the dog's collar, while the other side of the hook clips on to the dog's tag. You will most likely need to use a pair of pliers to close each side of the hook, to ensure that the tag stays in place, otherwise it will fall off the collar and the tag will be lost.
Benefits
-
Using an "S" hook is beneficial because one side of the hook is clamped in place, reducing the likelihood of the tag becoming detached from the collar. Unlike an "O" hook, the "S" hook will stay in place and the dog tag won't turn as your dog moves. Sometimes when using an "O" hook, the tag can turn backwards, making it nearly impossible to read the dog's tag, unless it's printed on both sides.
Considerations
-
Though there are benefits to using an "S" hook to hold your dog's tag in place, there are also some things to consider. First, you must make sure that the collar you have on your dog has a loop available or a tag. You cannot use an "S" hook on a collar that clips together and does not feature a tag loop. If you do not make sure that either side of the hook is clamped down, your dog will likely lose the tag, as it's easy to slip out of an "S" hook that's not properly secured.
Misconceptions
-
There are no superior pet tag hooks, both the "S" and "O" hooks work about the same. The "O" hook can be difficult to open and get the tag onto because it is basically a smaller version of a key ring. If not tightened enough, the dog tag can slip off of an "S" hook. If not properly tightened, the whole tag can slip off of an "S" hook and can be lost.

How Do S-Hooks Work for Pet Tags?
There are at least two commonly used types of hooks for pet tags. The first type is an "O" hook, or ring hook, and the second type is called an "S" hook. The type you choose for your pet's tag is up to you, as both will hold the tag in place. Each tag its set of pros and cons associated with it. There are a few things to consider before making a decision.
