The Basenji

The Basenji is a smooth, muscular dog, originally from central Africa. According to National Geographic, the Basenji is the only dog that doesn't bark at all. It can, however, howl and scream very loudly when it craves attention.
It grows from 16 to 17 inches high and weighs between 22 and 24 pounds. The Basenji is an intelligent, affectionate dog and makes a great pet. It is also energetic, playful, and needs regular exercise.
The Japanese Chin

The Japanese Chin, or Japanese Spaniel, is a broad-headed, short-muzzled dog, originally from China. It frequently announces visitors but is typically a quiet dog, according to Dan Rice in his book "Small Dog Breeds."
The Japanese Chin grows from seven to 11 inches high and weighs between four and 15 pounds. The American Kennel Club says it's an intelligent, affectionate dog that loves everyone it is familiar with. It makes an ideal apartment dog but still enjoys exercise.
The French Bulldog

The French Bulldog is muscular with a smooth coat, short face, and heavy bone structure, and is originally from England. D. Caroline Coile notes in her book "French bulldogs" that they are not "barky" dogs, and usually only bark for a good reason.
The French bulldog grows from between 11 to 12 inches high and weighs between 19 and 28 pounds. A very social dog, it is also playful and loving. It doesn't need much exercise but may need air conditioning in hot weather.
The Havanese

The Havanese is a sturdy dog with wavy, silky hair. Originally from Spain, it is now the national dog of Cuba. Although it will bark to alert you to a stranger's presence, it is generally quiet.
The Havanese grows from 8 ½ to 11 ½ inches high and weighs between seven and 13 pounds. The dog is intelligent, affectionate, and active, requiring regular exercise.
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, originally from England, is an elegant-looking toy breed with a long, silky coat. Most of these dogs are laid-back and quiet.
They grow from 12 to 13 inches high and weigh between 13 and 18 pounds. According to the American Kennel Club, they are friendly and affectionate. This breed is energetic but very adaptable, happy to both laze around the house and take long walks.
