Dogs for Kids With Allergies & Asthma

According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, about 10 percent of people in U.S. are allergic to animals. Dog allergens come from the skin, urine or saliva and they are small enough to scatter around the home unseen. There is no such thing as an allergy free dog, because they all produce small amounts of pet dander. However, there are options for people who love dogs but suffer from allergies and asthma. The term "hypoallergenic breed" means that the dog produces a reduced allergic reaction. The suggested dogs for allergy-suffering children only produce a small amount of dander.

  1. Poodle

    • The poodle is ideal for allergy and asthma sufferers because of its hypoallergenic coat. Standard, miniature, and toy poodles are all great choices because they do not shed hair. Poodles originated in Germany for water retrieving; in modern days they make great house pets. Frequent grooming is required to keep the curly coat short and free of tangles or knots. Poodles also have a nice temperament for children because they are active and intelligent.

    Maltese

    • The Maltese is a miniature dog with long, silky white hair from head to toe, but it does not shed. According to the American Kennel Club, Maltese were the "aristocrats of the canine world" because people of royalty around the world owned them. This is a suitable breed for children because of its gentle and affectionate personality. These dogs are playful and fearless, yet well mannered. Their long white coat requires daily combing to avoid tangles, and frequent grooming. An adult Maltese is typically only 7 lbs.

    Chinese Crested

    • Chinese crested are toy dogs that come in two varieties. The hairless crested has a small amount of hair on only its head, tail and feet. The powderpuff crested has soft, straight hair from head to toe. These dogs shed little to no hair, so they are appropriate for children with allergies and asthma. Chinese crested crave companionship and are playful with children. The typical size of a Chinese crested is 11 to 13 inches tall.

    Bichon Frise

    • The bichon frise is a vibrant, happy house pet with little allergens. The fluffy, white coat of a Bichon does not shed, so it is ideal for allergy and asthma sufferers. However, the thick curly hair requires grooming often to avoid matting. Bichons also do well with children because they are commonly peaceful and love to snuggle. A common problem with bichons is their difficulty to house break.

    Yorkshire Terrier

    • Yorkshire terriers (commonly known as Yorkies) have hair and not fur. Having hair makes them hypoallergenic and wonderful for kids with allergies and asthma. Yorkies require proper grooming and brushing to keep their hair healthy. According to the Yorkie Info Center, this breed of dog is exceptionally smart and above average for canines. They are also very energetic and make great companions for active children. A well trained Yorkie can be a great house companion to children of any age.

    Portuguese Water Dog

    • There are two types of Portuguese water dogs, and both are ideal for children who suffer from allergies and asthma. The curly variety of this breed has compact curls and the wavy type has gentle, loose waves with a little sheen. Both varieties are hypoallergenic and fine pets for allergy suffering children. According to the Portuguese Water Dog Club of America, these dogs require extensive grooming. Their hair tends to mat if it is not brushed and groomed often. Portuguese water dogs work well with children who can give them much needed attention and exercise.
