How to Teach Shih Tzu Dogs Not to Urinate Everywhere

Teaching a Shih Tzu dog not to urinate everywhere may seem impossible. With consistency, patience and treats, though, it's a task that can be accomplished, or at the very least, a problem that can be controlled. The Shih Tzu is typically laid back, easy-going and suited to life with people who are "allergic" to exercise. The Shih Tzu, pronounced "sheet-sue," also can be stubborn and lazy, which is why it can be difficult to potty train.

      Short-leashing can help with training.

Supervise your Shih Tzu at all times. To do this, put a harness on your dog, attach a leash to the harness and clip the leash to your belt loop. This is called short-leashing or umbilical cord training.

Watch your Shih Tzu's every movement. When he starts to dance around or show other signs of agitation, say, "Ack!" Use a voice loud enough to startle him. Startling your dog directs his attention away from the act he contemplated.

Take your Shih Tzu outside to potty. Go to a designated area, and, using the same words or phrase each time, tell her to potty.

Praise your Shih Tzu as soon as he urinates outside. If he is only food-motivated, also give him a treat as soon as he urinates out of the home. If he does not potty within a few minutes, take him inside, and start the process again.
