How to Find Breeder Lists

Choosing a dog to add to your family is an exciting moment and a demanding responsibility. If you have decided not to rescue a dog, be sure to use a reputable breeder. If they are ready to hand a dog over at the first sight of money, no questions asked, then you should be wary of their breeding methods. Good breeders will ask you plenty of questions about your home setting and your reasons for adding a dog. Dog clubs like the AKC (American Kennel Club) have a list of solid breeders you can contact.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact your regional AKC breeder using the AKC Breeder Referral Contacts website. The breeder lists are broken up into regions with a representative of each breed volunteering as a main AKC contact.

    • 2

Ask the breeder referral contact for a list of the local breeders in your area. Most AKC breeders will not want to ship the dog across the country, so stick with breeders who are within driving distance. They will be able to send you a list of all breeders who are official members of the AKC.

    • 3

Call the AKC breeders from this list and ask them for a recommended list of known breeders in your area. Breeders often have contacts that reach beyond just the AKC, and they can provide you with names of quality breeders who may not be official members of the AKC.

Go to your local veterinarian and ask for a list of reputable breeders. They deal with breeders on a regular basis and have contacts for local AKC related and non-AKC related dog clubs.
