Observe
-
Observe your dog closely during her pregnancy and watch for any changes in behavior. She may have discharge throughout her gestation period. If you see discharge, wipe her clean. If you notice major changes in behavior, she may be getting close to delivery. She will seek alone time. Every dog labors differently. She may yelp in pain or be silent while she delivers her babies. If you notice too much time passing between puppies, call your vet. In rare cases dogs need surgical assistance with delivery.
Dog Bed
-
Provide your dog with a comfortable dog bed during and after her pregnancy. She will be sleeping more often. If she has a warm place to sleep, she will get more adequate rest. She may even decide to stay in the dog bed and deliver her puppies there. Typically dogs like to deliver their puppies in dark private areas. Place her dog bed in a large closet or quiet corner of the house. A dog's gestation period is about 62 days, just over two months.
Prevenative Measures
-
While your dog is pregnant, she may need flea and worming treatments. These are preventative measures that can ensure her health as well as the health of her new puppies. Worms are often transmitted through the mother dog's milk, so keeping your female dog free of worms will protect her new pups. The same goes for fleas, because they can easily be spread from mother to puppies.
Continue taking your dog to her regular veterinary appointments and take steps to prepare for the birth of the puppies. The Hill Top Animal Hospital says to keep clean towels on hand and always provide her with food and water. Your dog will need more food while she is pregnant, so expect to replace her food more often.

Pregnant Dog Tips
Pregnancy is difficult for dogs and humans alike. During your dog's pregnancy she will be more tired and lethargic, because her body is working hard to nourish her unborn puppies. Every dog is different during pregnancy. Some dogs are happy, while others might be moody. She might seek comfort more often or find an isolated area to rest.
