Addison's Medications for Dogs

Typical Addison's disease, also known as hypoadrnocorticism, is a common disease among young dogs and is characterized by a deficiency of the adrenal, corticosteroid hormones. Female dogs are twice as affected as male dogs, with border collies or poodles being the most commonly affected breeds. Atypical Addison's disease occurs when there is complete destruction of the adrenal glands resulting the absence of corticosteroid hormones. Both typical and atypical Addison's disease will need medical treatment.
  1. Symptoms of Addison's Disease

    • Addison's disease can be life threatening if left untreated. The common symptoms that occur with Addison's disease is vomiting, diarrhea, hypoglycemia, a slowed heart rate and increased potassium levels. Addison's disease can often mimic other diseases, and the only definitive test is the ACTH stimulation test.

    Typical Addison's Disease Treatment

    • One medication that is often used for dogs with Addison's disease is Florinef. Florinef is an oral medication given up to twice a day as determined by sodium and potassium screening. Once electrolytes remain at a stable level it is only necessary to conduct blood tests twice a year. It is common that Florinef dosages will increase over time, as the patient becomes more tolerant.

An injectable medication that is commonly used as an alternative is Percorten-V. Percorten-V is given about every 25 days with monitoring of electrolyte levels every couple of weeks. Some dogs may require additional glucocorticoid supplements.

Side effects of both medications can occur, and include depression; excessive thirst and urination; digestive, skin and coat changes; weakness; and injection site reactions.

    Atypical Addison's Disease Treatment

    • Atypical Addison's disease will require complete glucocorticoid supplements, such as prednisone. Prednisone will stabilize the animal to the typical disease state with electrolyte imbalances, so side effects of this medication include excessive thirst and urination. A decrease in dosage may decrease or eliminate side effects.
