How to Build a Dog Enclosure Kennel Fence

Building a dog enclosure fence yourself is not too difficult and is more affordable than having someone else do it. Chain link is probably the easiest route--be sure to check your area's zoning regulations before you begin to build. Also, make sure that your kennel will be in a spot that gets at least some shade all day, so your dog will be comfortable outside.

Things You'll Need

  • Shovel
  • Concrete mix
  • Water
  • Wire cutters
  • Chain link rolls (measure the area to see how much is necessary)
  • Wheelbarrow

Instructions

    • 1

Measure your yard and plan the size of your kennel according to your dog's size and the space available. Mark the spaces where you will put your line posts. Usually they will be about 10 feet apart, closer if you are building a smaller kennel. Decide where to put your entry gate and mark spaces accordingly.

Dig holes about 1 foot into the ground for the line posts and then set them with concrete. To mix the concrete, you will pour the pre-mix into your wheelbarrow. Add a little water and pour the concrete mix on top of the pre-mix. Fold the water and concrete into the wheelbarrow with a shovel and keep adding water until the consistency resembles cake batter. Make sure it is not too dry, then put the posts in the holes and fill them with concrete. Your gate posts should go farther into the ground than your line posts because they are larger and heavier.

Measure to see how much chain link you will need. Using wire cutters, cut off any excess chain link. Using brace bands and bolts, secure the chain link to the line posts and gate posts. Then, secure the post caps. Don't forget to leave space for your gate. Stretch the chain link so it is taut, then tighten the bolts on the bands.

Install your gate. Make sure the top of the gate is in line with the top of the fence. Then, secure the gate onto its posts and tighten the hinges. Install the latch by tightening the bolts on the opposite side of the gate's hinges.
