Instructions
Puppy-proof your home. This process is similar to the same treatment a house undergoes when you have a toddler. Maltese puppies are small and can squeeze into spaces and get into places you may not think they can. Therefore, block areas in which the puppy should not enter, and remove any toxic plants or substances or small items your puppy may try to ingest. In addition, take away anything your puppy may want to chew on, for instance, electrical cords. Puppies love to chew on whatever they can; therefore, it is up to you to avoid destruction of your belongings by sharp Maltese puppy teeth.
Purchase a crate for your Maltese puppy, if you choose to crate train. Crate training is an easy and effective way to potty train your Maltese puppy. The key to successful crate training usually comes down to the size of the crate. The crate needs to be only big enough for the puppy to stand up and turn around in. Therefore, for a Maltese, the crate should be small. You can purchase a crate that would fit an adult Maltese; however, block off the extra space with blankets or dividers to keep your puppy out of that area until it becomes larger.
Establish a relationship with a groomer. Maltese dogs require grooming, whether it̵7;s just some light trimming or regular shaving. Either way, it is helpful to already have a groomer in mind who you want to work on your Maltese. Choose a groomer who has experience in working with Maltese puppies. Speak to your veterinarian or other Maltese owners for groomer recommendations. In addition, talk to the groomer about how old the puppy should be before its first grooming, and ask about exercises you can practice at home to get the pup familiar with the process such as rubbing its feet and ears.
Make your home Maltese puppy accessible. Maltese puppies are small and, to prevent injury, should not jump on or off objects that are high̵2;this includes couches and other furniture. Therefore, if you would like your puppy to spend time with you in your bed or loveseat, set up ramps or steps that will make it safe for your Maltese puppy to climb on and off the objects.
