What Is a Good Companion Dog for a Cairn Terrier?

The Cairn terrier is a small, working terrier that originated from the Highlands of Scotland. Cairns were bred for hunting small game, such as foxes, otters and weasels. Today, however, they are simply great companion and family dogs.
  1. Temperament

    • No two Cairns are the same; but generally speaking, Cairns are lovable and friendly. However, they can often be stubborn and willful if not properly trained. Cairns generally get along well with other pets and children.

    Similar Breeds

    • Scottish terriers and West Highland white terriers evolved from the Cairn terrier breed and were bred separately. Breeders also believe the Cairn terrier may be related to Skye terriers. These breeds exhibit similar character traits as Cairns.

    Male Cairn Terriers

    • A male Cairn terrier should not be in the same household as an unaltered male dog of any breed. If the Cairn is unaltered, it is best that he be in a single-dog household.

    Considerations

    • As a pack hunting dog, Cairns generally get along well with other dogs if socialized and properly trained. Often, Cairns do well with opposite-sex dogs. Cairns should always be watched when introduced to another dog to make sure the two can get along.

    Fun Fact

    • The most famous Cairn terrier is Toto from "The Wizard of Oz."
