How to Remove the Smell of Dog & Smoke out of Wood

Dog urine can leave a pungent smell on wood floors and furniture, especially if it is mixed with the smell of smoke. Often, when dogs are left inside, become excited or have anxiety problems, they will urinate indoors. It is important to treat the underlying problem if urination continues to be an issue. Make sure that your dog is getting enough exercise. Have a vet check for any physical problems. And remove the leftover urine and smoke smells out of your wood before it becomes ruined.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all furniture or rugs around the flooring and take off any objects on furniture that has been soiled with urine. Screw in a black-light bulb to find the residue of the urine. Turn off the lights and mark the urine areas with a piece of chalk. A black light will show both new and old urine stains.

Use a damp soft cloth to wipe top of the wood. Wet the cloth with cold water. Dust the furniture or wood flooring with baking soda to get rid of the smoke smell. Allow it to sit for a few minutes before wiping it off with a damp sponge.

    • 3

Spray the floor or furniture with a cleaning product specially made for removing dog urine, such as Urine-Off. Apply a thick layer of spray. Wipe off the spray with a cold damp cloth.

    • 4

Mix a wood-cleaning product with cold water and lightly dampen the wood floor with the mixture. Wipe up the floor with a soft cloth, so that it is completely dry. Place a fan next to the cleaning area.

Apply a polyurethane finish to the floor. Follow the directions accordingly. Allow the finish to dry before applying another coat.
