Things You'll Need
- Baby gates
- Puppy leash
Instructions
Prior to bringing the puppy home, set up areas in the home that are off limits. Purchase child gates to close off rooms and hallways so the cat has a safe zone to retreat to. The kitchen area is a good starting place for the puppy to roam because it is usually a high traffic area and will keep the puppy active.
Keep the puppy on a leash when bringing into the home for the first time. Do not let the puppy out of your site until the two pets have met each other. Let the cat approach on her own so that she can sniff out (and hiss) the new puppy.
Separate the two animals if they attempt to strike at each other and spend individual time pampering each pet. Use the word ̶0;No̶1; to stop aggressive behavior but never hit the animals.
Walk the puppy around the home on a leash to show the cat that he is a new member of the family. Move the baby gates to expand the puppy̵7;s area gradually over the week. This allows the puppy to wander more and allows each pet get used to the other.
Remove the cat if she attempts to lash out at the puppy to show her that it not acceptable. This will lower the cat̵7;s attempt at dominance in the house.
Don̵7;t force the puppy and cat to be together in the same area until a comfort level has been created. Keep the puppy on a leash for two to four weeks while in common areas where both animals are present. Reward the puppy by giving a treat if he leaves the cat alone.
