Signs That a Dog Is Shy or Nervous

Dogs can suffer from anxiety disorders just as humans do. Dogs can run the gamut between simple shyness all the way to full up panic attacks. They can exhibit aggression, destructive behavior or even cowering. Watch for signs and symptoms that may mean your pooch is shy or nervous.
  1. Agitation

    • Nervous dogs can show their anxiety through agitation. Barking incessantly is one way the dog shows you he is agitated. Another way is by pacing excessively; the dog just can̵7;t seem to relax and settle down into a sitting or laying position. Finally, a dog shows his agitation through growling. Watch out when a dog growls, because this could be a warning of an impending bite.

    Licking

    • A dog that licks himself excessively can be showing symptoms of unease. Some dogs lick themselves to the point of body hair becoming sparse. Exposed skin may become irritated and red. Another licking sign is when the dog licks his lips repeatedly. This is done in the absence of any food stimulus.

    Destructive Behavior

    • Destructive behavior, while often viewed as a sign of boredom or malice, can be caused by shyness or nervousness. Commonly, chewing household articles is a sign of nervousness in a dog. This can range from shoes or socks all the way to the living room furniture. Another destructive behavior is urinating or defecating in the house. Dogs may be thought lazy, angry or having a weak bladder when this happens, however, this can be a symptom of high anxiety.

    Seclusion

    • If your dog constantly seeks seclusion, he could be very shy or nervous. Favorite places to hide are under the bed or under the couch. No amount of coaxing will get him to come out of seclusion. He may even refuse a favorite food treat. Another secluding behavior is the dog backing away from you. You may be using a friendly voice and offering to pet the dog, yet he will back away from you.

    Posture

    • A certain sign of a nervous dog is his posture. Notably, a nervous dog̵7;s tail will be between his legs. A content and happy dog will either wag or extend his tail outward. Another sign is that the ears are flat to the head. This gives the dog a somewhat dejected look. If your dog looks cold because he is shivering, check again. He could be shaking from fear. Finally, if your dog averts his gaze from you and won̵7;t maintain eye contact, he could be shy.

    Yawning

    • An unusual symptom of anxiety is yawning excessively. If your dog has a habit of yawning frequently at all times of the day, then he could be showing anxiety.
