Instructions
Start your dog on a raw food diet. Have your dog eat only meats for a while so that it can absorb proteins and vitamins. The diet can include meats such as chicken, lamb, pork and fish. Other raw foods include raw eggs and fruit. Vetinfo.com asserts that by having a dog eat raw foods--such as dogs have done for thousands of years--the dog will have more energy and a strengthened immune system. The raw food diet is controversial, however, so speak with your veterinarian before putting your dog on this or any sort of diet.
Add herbs such as echinacea, olive leaves or astragalus to your dog̵7;s diet periodically, such as once or twice a week. These herbs--especially astragalus--can assist in balancing your dog's adrenal glands, blood pressure and sugars. Astragalus membranaceus, which is known as huang qi in traditional Chinese medicine, is used to strengthen the immune system. It provides antioxidants in the body, fights respiratory problems, protects the liver and it can also treat disease such as diabetes and helps control high blood pressure. You can get these in tablet or liquid form from an herbalist shop or an herbal veterinarian.
Add the herb dandelion once or twice a month. According to Denes Natural Pet Care, dandelions help remove excess fluid from your dog's body and increase the flow of bile production. It also helps maintain potassium levels and provides healthy coat and hair growth.
Get your dog to exercise at least an hour a day. Exercising burns off calories and helps your dog̵7;s heart remain healthy. Two ways of promoting exercise are going for a long walk or playing fetch.
