Homemade Pet Meds

Pets are members of the family, and when they're sick, you want to do everything you can to make them feel better.

Taking your pet to the veterinarian is an option, but sometimes homemade pet meds and some tender loving care is all that's needed to help a pet recover.
  1. Dog Diarrhea

    • When your dog suffers from diarrhea, he is passing loose stools more frequently than usual. Diarrhea can be caused by a change in diet, stress, or he may have eaten something toxic that he found in the house or yard.

Switching your dog to a bland food diet, may be all you need to do to stop the diarrhea.

Before introducing your dog to bland foods, let his system clear by withholding food for 24 hours, but keep his water bowl filled with clean water at all times.

Bland foods such as cooked chicken or lean ground beef, white rice, boiled sweet potatoes, and plain yogurt, won't irritate his digestive tract, and will provide essential nutrients.

Feed your dog a mixture of half meat and half rice or oatmeal. Small quantities of sweet potato or plain yogurt may also be added to the mixture.

    Flea Repellents

    • To make a safe and effective flea repellent for your dog, measure a quart of water in a pan, add 6 lemons cut in half, and bring to a boil. Let it steep for a few hours, and then strain the contents into a spray bottle.

Spray on your dog's fur, but don't spray near the eyes. To apply the spray to your dog's face, spray a small amount into your hand, and then work the spray into the dog's fur.

To make a gentle solution that won't irritate your dog's skin, dilute a floral scented shampoo with water, and spray on the fur, or rub it in. Take him out in the sun to play, so his coat can air dry.

"According to Paws-Rescue, when you're combing your dog's fur, spread a little petroleum jelly on the tines, so the fleas will stick. (See References 1)"

To get rid of pesky fleas, grab a cotton ball, some rubbing alcohol, and a cup filled up halfway with warm soap and water. Soak the cotton ball in the rubbing alcohol.

If you see fleas on your dog's fur, dab them with the alcohol soaked cotton ball. The rubbing alcohol will keep them from moving so fast, and you'll be able to remove the fleas. Drop fleas in the cup, pushing them all the way to the bottom. Flush the contents of the cup down the toilet, or sink.
