Register for free online at nutsformutts.org (see Resources below). You will need to fill in the basics like your name, address and phone number. It will also ask how you heard about the walk. Since there's no option for "eHow," you would just select "Other." You will also be asked to create a profile, which will consist of your username (email address) and password. This will allow you to manage your Walk page, which will keep track of your efforts and the donations received.
Download the fundraising kit from the website.
Set a goal for how much money you would like to raise, and be realistic. Consider whom you will be targeting, including friends, family, coworkers and businesses, and also about how much you can expect from each donor. Nuts for Mutts asks that you raise a minimum of $150, but you certainly don't have to stop there (and will be allowed to walk even if you don't meet the minimum).
Email potential donors from the website. Your supporters will be able to follow a link in their email and connect directly to a Sponsor a Walker donation form. You might also send a letter and include a donation form along with it. Or for a more personal touch, start off by asking in person and then follow up with an email from the website.
Talk about the Nuts for Mutts Walk and your participation whenever you have the opportunity. The more people you tell, the more chances you will have to raise funds, as well as spread the word about New Leash on Life and their life-saving programs, and pet overpopulation in general.
Good luck! And happy trails (I mean tails).
How to Participate in the Nuts for Mutts Walk
Each spring, adults, kids and pooches in the Los Angeles area gear up for the Nuts for Mutts 5K walk -- to benefit New Leash on Life -- a nonprofit organization located in Los Angeles and Chicago that rescues and finds homes for pets, sponsors humane education seminars and rehabilitates and trains therapy dogs. The 2010 Nuts for Mutts walk will take place in Calabasas, a scenic setting outside of Los Angeles. Here is how to sign up and get walking.
