How to Walk a Shy Dog

A shy dog is easy to spot. His tail will be down, tucked up between his legs and against his stomach. He will be hiding behind his owner, or tangled in her legs. His head will dart nervously at any strange noise or person. A shy dog is often the result of poor socialization. The best treatment for this is the dog's worst nightmare -- spending more time in the dangerous outdoors. Taking the shy dog out on the leash gives him the security of one thing -- you, with that thin leash grasped in your hand.

Instructions

    • 1

Put the dog in a sit position. Once he sits, approach him with the choke collar and put it over his head. Attach the leash.

    • 2

Walk confidently through the door and into the outdoors. Your dog will take his cues from you, so if your posture is confident, he'll begin to trust your confidence.

    • 3

Walk briskly. A shy dog won't have as much chance to be nervous if he's having to pay attention and follow you. Gently tug on the collar if he gets distracted, and have him keep pace.

    • 4

Stop frequently and put him in a sit. Pet and reward with treats.

    • 5

Walk in areas that are busy -- parks, town sidewalks, PetSmart. Only reward the dog when he is acting brave and listening to your commands -- ignore him when he cowers. He'll learn that the behavior you are reinforcing is the relaxed dog, not the scared dog.

Given time, exposure, and a regular routine, your shy dog will slowly become happier and more confident.
