Irish Names for Dogs

An Irish name for a beloved pet isn't really much of a stretch, even if you are not Irish. The naming website NameNerds.com says that many types of wolves and hounds have a special meaning in the Irish community, and their breed names reflect that: Irish Wolfhound, Irish Setter, Kerry Blue Terrier, among others.
But while those types of dogs are obviously native to Ireland, any dog with a fondness for the Northern island can take on a great name with a special meaning. Many Irish dog names are ones that you already recognize, like Conan and Colin, which mean hound and whelp (or mammal offspring), respectively. Other names that evoke wolf imagery are Cana or Canagan, which both mean wolf cub; Conall, a name for strong as a wolf; Convel, for wolf warrior; and Felan (alternatively spelled Phelan), which simply means wolf.
Hound names are also in high supply: Anlan means great hound, Conor is a lover of hounds, Conry's are king of hounds, Cuan is a wolf or hound, and the lists goes on. More familiar names, like Murphy and Madden, are also very appropriate for a dog, as they each mean hound of the sea and little dog, respectively.
If your pup doesn't resemble a wolf or hound, or isn't the strong, warrior type, there are still Irish names that may fit his personality or breed. The Irish language is full of affectionate phrases that may make a great dog name. For a female dog, Colleen may be a great choice, as it means little girl, or Catcheen, which is kitten, and is akin to the name Katie. Alannah means my child, while both Aroon and Asthore mean my love. And for the puppy with the nicest disposition, there's the name Milish, which simply means sweet.
