Meet with the owner prior to caring for the pet
-
Set up a time to get together with the pet owners and go over instructions before the day of departure. Dogs may require medication, special food or exercise. Gently check the dog over from head to toe. Note any abnormalities with the owners so there are no surprises when they return. Get the veterinarian's phone number for emergencies.
Get feeding instructions and make sure there is enough food for the entire stay. Find out if the dog is allowed treats or is allergic to any foods. Do not stray from the normal feeding habits of the pet. Stay away from rich treats if the dog is having any digestive problems or a nervous stomach.
Provide adequate care for the dog
-
Be punctual with all care visits. Staying on schedule helps maintain a state of calm for the pets. Take into account any medication times or special feeding instructions when planning your daily routine. Some dogs will have digestive problems when owners are away. Problems may include loss of appetite, gorging, vomiting and diarrhea. Spend extra time with the pet in the first few days to reassure it and help ease stress.
For minor cases of diarrhea, place one tablespoon of plain yogurt on dry dog food. Dogs love it and it helps settle stomachs and replaces essential bacteria in the digestive tract. Do not use more than one tbsp for any size dog. For severe cases of diarrhea/vomiting (lasting more than 12 to 24 hours) call the veterinarian.
Some dogs become clingy when the owners are away. Spend extra time with the pet to reassure them. Not doing so could result in the dog becoming anxious. Anxious dogs destroy property or can injure themselves if not properly supervised. These are all signs of separation anxiety, and the owners should be informed during a check-in or upon return. Notify pet owners immediately if the dog is taken to the veterinarian for treatment of any kind.
Follow up with the pet owner
-
Follow up immediately when the owners return. Explain any issues that came up while caring for their pets. Be honest and upfront about any damage that occurred. Explain any veterinary calls that were made, even if no action was taken on the dog. Settle any payments and offer your services for future pet care. Taking care of dogs can become a full-time income if it's done professionally.
