How Can I Build a Patio Enclosure?

There are many different ways to create a patio enclosure -- for your pets or your own privacy and security. It is important to make sure that you have the right materials, and that you are able to attach them to the patio to ensure not only your safety and that of your animal, but also to provide enjoyment of the patio for many uses.
  1. Decide on Materials

    • Decide which materials you are going to need to build a patio enclosure, based on three considerations. First, the type of patio you have and whether there are already things you can use, such as wrought-iron or other fencing. Second, the type of animal that you would like to let free on your patio enclosure as well as the number of people who may use it at the same time. And third, the size of the area. If you already have patio railings or fencing, you can use materials like chicken wire or snow fencing. If you don't have any fencing on your patio, you will need a material that can stand on its own, like rabbit-proof or garden fencing material. For large animals, you will need fencing that is quite tall, with less height for small animal. As a rule, make sure that the materials are as high as your animal standing on its hind legs. If your animal jumps or climbs, the material must be higher -- use your judgment depending on how far your animal can climb or jump.

You might also want to use materials for your patio even if you don't have pets. It might be an issue of privacy. For enclosures for yourself, you can use inexpensive materials like willow and bamboo, or even woven or cloth materials.

    Attach Materials to Patio

    • Securely attach chicken wire or snow fencing to any existing rails or other type of material, such as a deck or neighboring fence posts. For areas without existing fences or structures, push the fencing into the ground around the edges of your patio. Depending on the strength of your animal, your fence might have to be reinforced with posts and rails driven into the ground.

If you live in an apartment or don't own your home, check with your landlord or the home owner before driving material into the ground. If you cannot use a permanent fence, you can purchase one that is temporary.

    Decorate and Outfit the Area

    • Paint the fencing material to match your existing patio decor and furnishings. Decorate according to your taste; for example, you might wish to string vine plants along the new patio fencing or place potted plants along the perimeter.

You can also decorate your fencing area with things like wind veins or fountains, as well as bird baths. Treat it as you would normally treat your backyard, and allow your creativity to shine.
