Shelter and Shade
-
The most important thing to provide for your dog in the backyard is appropriate shelter and shade, especially if your dog stays outside all of the time. A good-quality dog house and a patio umbrella or other shade cover are essential.
Water
-
Dogs need water when they are outside. A clean, sturdy dog bowl is a must, but consider other ways to keep your dog hydrated. Add a small, plastic pool or a more elaborate backyard pond or fountain for her to play in.
Dog Sandbox
-
Dogs have an instinct to dig, and some breeds, such as terriers, were bred to dig. For fun and exercise, provide your dog with his own sandbox. A designated place for digging will give your dog an outlet for his instincts and will save the rest of your landscaping.
Agility Course
-
An agility course in the backyard can be fun for both dog and owner. Several companies sell agility kits that you can install yourself, along with training DVDs to show you how to teach your dog agility.
Rest and Relaxation
-
Many dogs enjoy spending time lying in the sun and breeze. It's important to provide a comfortable bed for your dog, preferably not in direct contact with the ground. Consider a sturdy plastic and mesh bed such as a Kuranda bed instead of a plush bed.
