Place a comfortable dog bed or blanket in the crate with the dog. Make sure it is an old one in case she starts chewing on it or has an accident. Do everything you can to make sure your dog is comfortable in her crate.

Take your dog on a long walk, or let him play for at least 30 minutes prior to putting your dog in the crate. This will help tire him out, and hopefully reduce the amount of time your dog will bark in his crate. Make this part of your routine before bed, and any time he or she must be crated for more than a couple hours at a time.

Place the crate in a dark and quiet place, away from all members of the family. It is important that the dog doesn't see or hear anyone in the house. As soon as she does, she may start barking to get someone's attention.

Cover the crate with a blanket to help reduce any visual stimulation that can cause the dog to bark. Again, use an old blanket in case he gets a hold of it and starts chewing. This will help darken the area for the dog, which will usually result in your dog laying down and relaxing. This is also a good technique if your dog barks every time your cat walks by.

Don't respond to your dog when he barks. If you respond, either by yelling or comforting, your dog has succeeded in getting your attention. It may take some time, but if he learns that you will not respond to him, he will eventually learn that there is no point in barking continuously.
