Go to Petfinder.com (see Resources). This reputable site allows rescues, shelters and private individuals to list their adoptable animals.
Fill out the information on the left side of the screen under the heading "Search for a Pet". Set the drop-down menu under animal to "Dog" and enter the breed, age, size, gender and location criteria. Using fewer criteria will give you a wider range of search results. The location is a mandatory field.
Click on the name of the pet you are interested in adopting when the search results appear. This will display any information Petfinder.com has listed for this animal.
Scroll down to see the contact information for the individual, rescue or shelter. Contact the holder to arrange a visit with the dog, if possible. The holder of the dog will likely have an adoption procedure in place; this varies from organization to organization. Commonly, it involves an adoption application that asks for contact information, information on any pets or children in the household, amount of time able to be devoted to the care of the dog and current vet and character references. There may also be a fee or donation involved.
Complete the adoption application and pay any applicable fees if, after meeting the dog, it is decided on as a good fit. The organization or individual holding the dog will make the final judgment. If you are deemed a suitable adopter, you may begin preparing your home for your new arrival and arrange for your dog's transport to its new home.
