How to Care for Maltese Dogs

Maltese dogs are considered a toy breed and are in the family of Poodles, Bichon Frise and Havanese dogs. Maltese dogs weigh about 4 to 7 lbs. The Maltese considers itself a "lap" dog; it loves to just sit in your lap. The Maltese is known for its strong bonding ability and its gentle manner. This little dog will follow you everywhere and love you unconditionally.

Bathe your Maltese every two to four weeks. Use a gentle shampoo and do not get the soap in the dog's eyes or ears. Use a conditioner to keep their beautiful white fur soft. Blow their fur dry on the lowest dryer temperature. Brush the coat while you dry.

Groom your Maltese every three months to keep the hair relatively short. Brush your Maltese daily, especially if its fur is long, to keep it from becoming matted.

    • 3

Buy a small dog bed for sleeping. Alternately, a Maltese will feel at home on a small blanket. Keep the bed or blanket inside where it is warm. Maltese dogs aren't fond of the cold or being separated from their owners, so they shouldn't be left outside at night.
