Mix 1 part fabric softener with 3 parts water and put it into a spray bottle. Spray the mix evenly over the carpet and allow it to dry for 15 to 30 minutes depending on your carpet type.

Clean your vacuum out making sure that the filters and hoses aren't clogged. Vacuum the carpet slowly and evenly. The fabric softener should make the pet hair clump making it easier for the vacuum to remove. Make sure to use the attachments on the vacuum to get those hard to reach corners and the areas underneath the couch.

Brush your dog or pet with a good slicker brush at least twice a week, more if they have thicker hair. You should follow this up with an undercoat hair removal brush like the Furminator. This has the advantage of pulling out all of the loose dead hair from the undercoat of the animal that they slicker brush can't reach and will greatly reduce shedding.
