Maltese puppies are one of the most popular breeds for small dog lovers. Considering that they don't shed, they are also very popular dogs amongst people that suffer allergies, too.

    • When born, a Maltese puppy can fit in the palm of your hand. They can weigh less than a pound and grow to be between 4 and 7 pounds and 9 to 10 inches tall.

    History

    • The breed of Maltese is considered to be the oldest European toy breed. They were often the pets of royalty and the aristocracy.

    Features

    • Rather than fur, Maltese have hair. It is always white, straight and lacks an undercoat. Maltese do not shed. Regarding their personality, Maltese are very affectionate and social, and need constant attention.

    Warning

    • Maltese are prone to sunburn where their hair parts. If they are not brushed daily, their hair can become knotted and matted. Since they are pure white, it is imperative that they be washed or dry shampooed often.

    Types

    • There is only one type of Maltese. The Maltese is always a toy breed. Teacup refers to the size of the dog, not a difference in breed.

    Identification

    • Maltese is the only breed of dog with a long, silky white coat. The are white and pink when born, like mice.

    Considerations

    • Maltese puppies are very demanding and quite difficult to train. They are born with their eyes and ears closed, which can remain closed for up to two weeks.
