Instructions
Choose whether you would like a long-haired or short-haired chihuahua. The short-haired chihuahua requires little grooming and features a short, glossy coat over his entire body. The long-haired chihuahua requires weekly brushing to keep mats and tangles out of his slightly wavy fur. Both types of chihuahuas come in a variety of different colors, including brown, black, white and fawn.
Consider adopting a chihuahua from a rescue organization. Foundations such as Chihuahua Rescue and Chihuahua Rescue U.S.A. are dedicated to placing chihuahuas in caring homes. Such organizations place both puppies and adult dogs that are unwanted, neglected or abused. Many owners find that rescued chihuahuas make the best pets once you gain their trust.
Contact chihuahua breeders. Most breeders have websites where you can view photos of their latest pups. If you like what you see, you can travel to meet the puppies in person. Take time to interact with the puppies before settling on the one that is right for you.
Visit pet stores in your area. Chihuahuas are popular toy breeds, so most stores will carry both the smooth-haired and long-haired varieties. Opt for pet stores that purchase their puppies from breeders rather than puppy mills. Those that come from puppy mills are more likely to be timid and nervous.
Acquire dog supplies before you bring your new c,hihuahua home. You'll need an appropriately sized collar and leash as well as dog food, a dog brush and dog shampoo.
Bathe your chihuahua once a month. Avoid getting water in his ears, as the breed is particularly prone to ear infections.
Protect your chihuahua from the cold. Due to their small size and short coats, chihuahuas are very sensitive to the cold. If you notice your chihuahua shaking, cover his body with a blanket.
Play with your pup daily. Chihuahuas don't need lots of exercise, but a daily play session will keep yours fit. They love walks, though they can't last on long ones due to their small size.
Take your chihuahua to the veterinarian for regular checkups. Common health issues that plague chihuahuas include tooth decay, eye problems and heart disease.
