How to Rescue a Maltese in Pennsylvania

The Maltese is a very popular dog but often winds up in animal rescue shelters because people buy the cute, fluffy puppy on impluse and don't realize what they've gotten themselves into. The rise in foreclosures are also contributing to people abandoning their dogs in record numbers. Perhaps you've decided that your next best friend should be a homeless Maltese. It can be a long process to adopt (or rescue) a Maltese, but it's worth it.

Instructions

    • 1

Research what it's like to live with a Maltese. They need more grooming and often more vet trips than other breeds. If you already know that the Maltese or a half-Maltese is the breed for you, proceed to Step 2.

    • 2

Put the word out that you want to rescue a Maltese. Tell your friends, co-workers, veterinarian and neighbors. They might know of a Maltese that needs a home. If this doesn't work, go to Step 3.

    • 3

Contact your local animal shelter and tell them you are interested in adopting a Maltese. They will ask for your phone number and call you when one is available for you to meet. Call them back every week to remind them.

    • 4

Contact your local Maltese or toy dog rescue, especially if you live in the Philadelphia area, where the American Maltese Association Rescue resides. You can contact them by phone or online.

    • 5

Fill out the extensive application forms. This can take about an hour. You may have to get a character reference letter from your veterinarian.

    • 6

Wait for the shelter or rescue to contact you to schedule an appointment. They may want you to come to their place or they may want to see your home to decide if it's good enough for a Maltese.

    • 7

Make any changes to your home that they recommend.

    • 8

Visit with the dog they choose to match your lifestyle and personality. You often have to go to a foster home for the visit. All of your family needs to visit. If all goes well, go to Step 9.

    • 9

Sign the contract, pay the adoption fees and bring your new best friend home.
