How to Rescue a Basset Hound

A Basset Hound Rescue is an example of a breed-specific shelter for dogs whose owners have surrendered guardianship. According to BassetHoundRescue.com, the national registry for Basset Hound groups, people most often surrender their Basset Hounds because of their temperament and hygiene. Bassets are willful, difficult to house-train and drool excessively. Owners who are new to the breed are sometimes unprepared for these characteristics or unable to meet the needs of their Basset. That’s why thousands of dogs are surrendered each year and why thousands of people are needed to help with rescue efforts. Find out how you can rescue a Basset Hound.

Get to know the breed. Go to the American Kennel Club website (see Resources section below) and read the Basset Hound profile in order to learn more about the breed’s history, physical characteristics and temperament.

Determine how you want to contribute to the rescue of a Basset Hound. Consider whether you want to adopt or foster a dog. Adoption is the permanent placement of a Basset Hound in your home. Fostering involves providing temporary shelter to a Basset Hound.

Find the nearest Basset Hound Rescue. Go to BassetHoundRescue.com for links to local websites. If you do not find a Basset Hound rescue in your state, locate a rescue in a neighboring state that's drivable.

Read through the adoption requirements for each rescue organization. Though each program has a similar process and mission, the requirements may vary slightly. For instance, some organizations require an evaluation of the home environment prior to placement, which might be difficult if you live far from the organization. Others require a signed legal contract stipulating the dog be returned to the rescue if you decide to surrender guardianship because the adoption is not working.
