Instructions
Begin by consulting either your veterinarian, or a pet supply store that you trust to decide the products to purchase. There are a number of different flea bombs and flea dips on the market. Let the experts guide you and then make your choice.
Prepare to bomb the house first. This means you need to plan for a time when you can be out of your home and have all of your family members and pets out of the home for a period of time. This usually amounts to a matter of a few hours, just to make sure your loved ones do not inhale the toxic fumes or get the substance on their skin.
Bomb your house as directed by the instructions on the product. This usually entails spraying down bedding, carpet and all other parts of the home where fleas live.
While you are out of your home, take this time to get all of your pets flea dipped. You can have your vet take care of this but it is very easy to do this yourself, and less expensive. Just purchase a recommended flea dip, and put your pet into a small kiddie pool or some sort of container of that size. Use a sponge and start applying the dip around the head and neck first. This is where the fleas usually gather, especially around the ears. Start there and work your way back to your pet's rear end. Be careful of their eyes as you do this. Follow directions on the product about rinsing.
Begin spraying your yard down while you are waiting for the flea bomb to take effect in your home. Many people miss this step, because they believe treating the pets and the house are enough. But you may not realize, fleas can get into your house by simply hopping onto your shoes and socks when you walk in the door, not to mention what your pets will bring in after playing in the yard. Spray down the entire area surrounding your home as per the instructions on the label.
Be prepared to possibly go through this procedure more than once. Sometimes a really bad infestation will call for several treatments. Once you feel you are free of the little critters, be sure to use the flea and tick prevention medication that your vet recommends for your pets. They can pick them up on any outing with you, or from other people and pets that come into your home and then you will have to start all over again.
