Make sure to walk the stronger, larger dog on your more dominant arm. If you are right handed, use your right hand to walk the larger dog and walk your smaller dog with the left. If you’re right handed you have more strength on that hand which will be able to give you more control.

Before you start walking two dogs at one time, it is best that you first have control over each dog when you walk them individually. Walking the dogs adds new excitement on their walk and they can easily not pay attention. They can learn better how to walk when they start off by themselves.

Take a short leash and forget the long one. Long leashes give the dogs free reign to move everywhere they want, sniff everything and get tangled on each other. Not only could it cause injury for you or the dogs, but it will also drive you insane trying to keep them separated. Keep your dogs at your sides instead of letting them walk ahead of you. They’re able to stay more separated from each other if they are at your side and more prone to paying attention.

If the dogs are very problematic, then get a double leash. They’ll be attached together so instead of going in two separate directions if they get distracted, they’ll both be going in the same direction if one of the dogs gets distracted.

Be aware of what both dogs are doing at all times. Before one of the dogs even starts to get away, you can catch him and stop it within seconds. For example, if you notice a dog down the block walking toward you and you see your dog notice it, you can quickly turn and go in another direction before a problem ensues and all three dogs go crazy.
