Instructions
Feed the puppy immediately. When a stray shows up unexpectedly, chances are the discarded puppy has not eaten for some time. If you don’t have puppy food handy, keep it relatively simple. Provide clean water and something simple, such as bread and shredded meat with a little cooked rice. You can pick up some puppy food later.
Give the orphaned puppy a bath. Fleas can be picked up easily outdoors, and there is not much chance that whomever abandoned the puppy took any precautions to protect the animal from an infestation. Even if you don’t have dog shampoo handy, a mild soap will do until you can purchase something more appropriate.
Schedule a visit to the vet and have the puppy checked out thoroughly. This allows any health issues to be dealt with immediately.
Begin training immediately. As soon as the vet has provided the puppy with the necessary shots, a flea dip and other basics, it is time to begin housebreaking the puppy. Consider obedience school if you do not have time to devote to the task yourself.
Give the puppy lots of love. Abandoned pets have sometimes gone through a great deal of abuse and need gentle touches and a reassuring tone of voice to begin feeling comfortable again. Puppies, like canines of all ages, instinctively perceive when a human genuinely has affection, and they will slowly begin to respond.
