When purchasing hard wood floors for your home look for those that are made of harder wood. Soft hardwood floors will be easier for Fido to scratch with his claws.

    • 2

Check your dog's toenails weekly to see if they need trimmed. Using a trimmer specifically for dogs will make this process much easier. When the dogs nails start to look long, cut them off.

Finish up the nail cutting job with a dremel tool. A dremel tool will allow you to sand off any rough edges on your dog's nails.

Cover the places where you think scratching will be a problem with small area rugs. For instance if you have hardwood flooring in your hallway, put a rug at the top of the stairs. That way when the dog goes bounding up the stairs they will hit the rug and be able to reduce their speed rather than by digging their nails into the flooring.
