As your dog ages, don't cut out his daily activity. Just change long, hearty walks into slower, shorter walks. Your dog will still love going out. Some old dogs still love to go on hikes, just be sure to take it easier on him, since he might be sore the next day.

Most old dogs start losing teeth. You can keep his teeth clean by giving him rawhide to chew, or by wrapping a dry, clean rag on your index finger, and rubbing his teeth if he'll let you.

    • 3

Give him a nice foam mat or cushy dog bed to lay on. Put them throughout the house.

    • 4

Some people buy a ramp to help the dog get in and out of the car easier. You can find them at pet stores.

    • 5

Try supplementing his diet with glucosamine tablets. A vet will supply these in the proper dosage.

Give your dog plenty of love and attention. Take him in the car just for fun. Brushing his coat daily often gets itches he can't reach anymore, and he'll love you for it.
