How to Care for an Arthritic Dog

If you have had your dog since she was a puppy, it's hard to see her in her later years as her legs get stiffer from arthritis, and she has more trouble getting around. She probably feels just fine underneath the inflammation of her joints from arthritis, so being patient with her and giving her supplements can usually help ease her pain and stiffness. Think about how you would like to be treated if your body was hurting, and you'll probably come up with some additional ideas to complement the ones below. Enjoy that creaky old pup while you've got her.

Give your dog a nice cushy dog bed or foam cushion to lie on in each room. She'll seek out these soft places to lie down and be close to you.

For exercise, try short, gentle walks with your buddy. She'll perk up at being outdoors. You don't have to get anywhere, even around the block is good for body and mind.

Keep in mind that the ideal exercise for arthritis is swimming. It takes all the weight and pressure off the joints. Find a lake, stream, pool, pond or ocean to take a dip in together.

If your dog seems to be in pain, consult your vet. The vet may suggest glucosamine tablets for joint pain. One pill a day can really ease your dog's discomfort.

Even though your dog may not love it, a warm bath can be soothing and ease stiffness. Although a dog may prefer just having you sit on the floor scratching her tummy instead.
