Instructions
Treat your dog to the utmost comfort on cold nights by placing a sheepskin or thick rug in front of the fireplace, if you have one. This becomes a place of honor and, more importantly, warmth--central to your pup's well-being.
Increase the exercise. On a daily basis, lengthen your walks or walk more times than usual. Try biking instead of walking and let the dog run alongside for a more intense workout. When on park outings, hikes or even trips to the beach, make sure to bring the dog if possible.
Toss old tennis balls or frisbees, or try kicking old soccer balls for your dog to fetch or chase. Whether in the backyard, front yard or park, increase or lengthen these playtimes. When playing group games such as baseball or kickball, the dog can join in the excitement.
Use old shirts, towels or rags to play tug o' war with your pup. You don't need a fancy toy to make this a favorite back-and-forth pulling activity.
Let the dog cuddle with you or other members of the family (while they read or watch television, for instance) in big soft chairs or couches, if allowed. Many dogs particularly enjoy blankets and cushions. Ah, the warmth.
