How to Walk Two Dogs With One Leash

You love taking your two dogs for walks, and they love to exercise while the three of you check out the neighborhood. Sometimes they love walking so much, they yank you all over the sidewalk and street to get a closer look at the squirrels, your neighbors, other dogs and those inviting trees. You end up constantly tangled between them. It would be great to walk more than one dog without frustration. With a two-dog leash connector, you can do exactly that.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Buy a double-dog leash at your local feed store or pet supply shop. It's a connector for your old leash, and it has a ring attached to a separate leash for each dog.

    • 2

Connect your old leash to the top ring of the connector. Make each of your dogs sit while you clip the leash connector onto their collars. The key to walking two dogs at once is getting them to respect the dog walker; they might as well start listening to you from the moment you attach the leash.

Keep both dogs next to each other as you head out the door.

    • 4

Walk with both dogs on one side of you. The double-dog leash connector will work best if they walk side-by-side. If one dog starts drifting over behind you, gently pull him back to the other dog. They will get used to walking alongside each other, and your job will get easier.

Keep your eyes out for things your dogs like to chase (like squirrels). If you spot the squirrel before they do, call them over and have them sit. Give each dog a treat. Eventually, every time you call them, they will immediately come over and sit for a treat. Keeping them focused on you makes walking two dogs on one leash a gentler experience.
