How to Use Portable Litter Trays

Cats always need access to a litter box or tray of some sort, even when they are traveling. Cats that hold in their urine while looking for an appropriate place to release it may be susceptible to bladder infections, and it will stress out a cat emotionally to not know where the nearest litter box is located. Fortunately, portable litter trays were created specifically for travel purposes.

Instructions

    • 1

Pack a large bag of litter for your trip. You will probably need to replace the litter in the tray several times during your vacation.

    • 2

Unfold the portable litter tray (most are collapsible and made of cloth) and set it up in a back corner of your cat's carrier. If there is no room in the carrier, you will have to set it up outside the carrier and let your cat out every couple of hours to see if she wants to use it.

    • 3

Fill the portable litter tray about two-thirds of the way full of litter. Do not fill it all the way to the top, as it will make the tray heavy to lift later and will inevitably cause litter to spill over the edge when your cat uses the tray.

    • 4

Clean the litter tray when it needs it by dumping out the soiled litter into a trash can or plastic bag and rinsing out the bottom of the tray. You can alternately wipe down the bottom of the tray with a wet cloth, then dry it with a dry cloth. Once the tray is dry, set it up for your cat again.

    • 5

Wash the portable litter tray in the washing machine when you get home. Most portable litter trays are machine washable and have absorbent inner liners. A thorough machine washing will make your portable litter tray ready for use the next time you travel with your cat.
