How to Care for an Afghan Hound

The Afghan Hound originated in the Middle East. It is an elegant dog known for its grace and its long silky hair. This fast, agile runner has a thick coat that provides warmth. The Afghan Hound requires special grooming and care. Here's how you can provide it.

Instructions

    • 1

Brush the coat regularly. An Afghan Hound's fur is prone to tangles and it must be checked daily. Tangles in the fur must be brushed out immediately. Use a slicker brush. Brush from underneath the fur rather than brushing from the outside to prevent further tangling.

    • 2

Put a snood over the dog's head before it eats. You can use a sock with the toes cut off, the leg off a pair of nylon stockings, or you can make one by hand. Place it over the dog's long ears to keep them from dipping in his food as he eats or getting into his water.

    • 3

Train with a gentle hand. Although you should still be consistent and firm, these dogs are incredibly sensitive and care should be taken while training. Don't pull on the leash or shout at the dog. Patience is needed since these are headstrong dogs.

    • 4

Walk the dog daily. An Afghan Hound needs to walk at least a mile a day. It should be kept in a fenced yard since this breed is prone to run away.

    • 5

Introduce your Afghan Hound to other people, other animals and unfamiliar situations as soon as possible. Their natural tendency is to be suspicious and aloof, so getting them used to being in various circumstances will prevent this.
