- Scoop litter boxes daily to remove solid waste.
- Clean any soiled areas (inside litter boxes, on blankets) and wipe them down with a disinfectant.
- Empty food bowls and replenish with fresh water daily.
- Sweep or vacuum floors to remove dirt and debris.
- Empty and clean water bottles (for small pets like hamsters) daily.
Weekly Cleaning
- Remove all bedding, blankets, and toys from the shelter and wash them in hot water.
- Allow them to dry completely before returning them to the shelter.
- Wipe down the walls, floors, and surfaces of the shelter with a mild detergent and water.
- Rinse thoroughly to remove any residual detergent.
- Change water in water fountains and wash or wipe down the bowl(s).
Deep Cleaning
- Once a month or as needed, perform a deep cleaning of the shelter.
- Remove all bedding, toys, and food from the shelter.
- Wash the walls, floors, and surfaces of the shelter with a disinfectant.
- Rinse thoroughly to remove any residual disinfectant.
- Leave the shelter to air dry completely before returning the bedding and toys.
Additional Cleaning Tips:
- For pets that are messy eaters, place a plastic mat underneath the food and water bowls to catch any spills.
- If your pet has diarrhea or vomiting, clean the area immediately with a disinfectant and rinse thoroughly.
- If your pet has fleas, ticks, or other parasites, consult with your veterinarian for a treatment plan and be sure to thoroughly clean your pet's shelter to prevent reinfestation.
- If you use any cleaning products on you pet's shelter, be sure that the products are labeled for use near animals and that they are safe for your pet to come in contact with.
- For outdoor shelters, make sure they offer protection from the elements. Clean outdoor shelters as often as needed to remove leaves and debris and prevent mildew and mold.
