- Urinary tract infection (UTI): UTIs are common in puppies, and can cause frequent urination, straining to urinate, bloody urine, and licking of the genital area.
- Vaginitis: Vaginitis means irritation and inflammation of the puppy’s vagina. This condition is more common in puppies that haven't been spayed. Symptoms include licking of the area and discharge from the vagina.
- Vulvar dermatitis: Dermatitis can occur anywhere on the skin and refers to skin irritation and inflammation. Vulvar dermatitis refers specifically to inflammation and irritation of the puppy’s vulva. Puppies affected with vulvar dermatitis might whine, lick the affected area, or attempt to scratch it.
- Foreign body: Sometimes, puppies can get foreign bodies stuck in their genital area, such as grass or twigs. This can cause irritation and licking.
- Skin allergies: Allergies to food, environmental allergens, or flea bites can cause itching and licking of the genital area.
- Behavioral issues: Some puppies may lick their genital area excessively as a way to soothe themselves or to relieve stress.
It is important to take your puppy to the vet to determine the cause of the licking and whimpering. The vet will be able to perform a physical examination and may recommend additional tests, such as a urinalysis or culture, to diagnose the underlying medical issue. Once the cause has been determined, the vet will recommend the appropriate treatment.
