Do raccoon dogs care for their young?
Raccoon dogs are quite social mammals and live in tightly bonded family groups. Usually, one litter may be born each year, after a gestation of about 60-70 days. Raccoon dogs breed in late winter and early spring. Most commonly four to six raccoon dog pups are born, but there can be up to 10 per litter. The young raccoon dogs are born very helpless and blind, and they are completely dependent on their parents for food and protection. The female raccoon dog will nurse the young pups for about 8-10 weeks. After that, they will start to eat solid food. The young raccoon dogs will stay with the family group for about 1-2 years, until they are independent and can disperse on their own.
