German Names & Meanings for My Puppy

German can be a tough language to master, but it's filled with strong, distinguished names. Perhaps your new pup's a German shepherd, weimaraner, schnauzer or other breed with roots in Germany. Or maybe you want to share your own heritage with your new friend. Either way, there are plenty of "gute Deutsch-Namen" -- good German names.
  1. Choosing the Right Name

    • Before you start your name search, there are a few tips to keep in mind. A name is used to get someone's attention, so choose something short and simple for your new friend. Imagine calling "Here Maximilliano," when you want him to come; it's a mouthful. Ask yourself if his name is easy: easy on your lips, easily understood and easily pronounced. One or two syllable names are the best choices because they're clear and understandable and above all, you want your dog to come when you call. Avoid using a name that's similar to commands, such as "Joe," which rhymes with "no."

    Regal and Noble Names

    • Your pup may feel like he's a little prince, or maybe she's a queen bee. There are a few names in German reflecting a noble heritage. For a boy, consider Derick, for ruler of the people; Fritz, a form of Frederick for peaceful ruler; and Imre, a great king. Potential names for a female include Ada, Adelle or Elsa, meaning noble; Selma is a divine protector; and Ebba has strength.

    Personality Traits

    • If your pup is brave and strong, Gerard or Geert works for a boy and Richelle or Leona is apt for a girl. Anna is gracious and Alvin is a friend to all. Manfred is a man of peace and Berta is intelligent and glorious. If your pup is a popular guy, Roland is famous in the land. If she enjoys a swim, Nixie is a water sprite. Miles and Milo indicate a merciful leader and Leyna is a little angel. For the dog who likes to wander, Wendell and Wanda are appropriate choices.

    Interesting Names

    • Sometimes you just like the sound of the name and aren't looking to necessarily marry your pup's name with his personality. However, it's always nice to know what the meaning behind the name is. Some nice female names and their meanings include: Maud, strong in battle; Helga, pious; Jenell, knowledge and understanding; Minna, love or mother; Heidi, noble and kind; and Senta, an assistant. Interesting male names include: Conrad, brave counsel; Herb, glorious soldier; Barrett, strong as a bear; Helmut, courageous; Penrod, commander; and Zelig, blessed one.

    Famous Germans

    • A famous name may not have the meaning you want, but if it's of a person you like or admire, it's worth considering. For example, Anne Frank is known the world over for her eloquence and bravery. Albert Einstein sets the standard for intelligence. Boris Becker and Steffi Graf are accomplished athletes. Heidi Klum and Karl Lagerfeld are standouts in the world of fashion.
