What to do if your dog eats sheetrock?

If you believe your dog has ingested sheetrock, follow these steps as quickly as possible:

1. Call your veterinarian OR emergency vet hospital and provide them with all the information you have about the incident.

2. If you are instructed to take your pet to the vet or emergency hospital, do so as soon as possible.

While waiting, you can take the following steps to try and reduce your dog’s risk of complications:

* Induce vomiting: If it has been less than 2 hours since your dog ate the sheetrock, you may be able to induce vomiting with hydrogen peroxide 3%. The recommended dose is 1 teaspoon of 3% hydrogen peroxide for every 10 pounds of body weight. Give your dog the hydrogen peroxide orally 3 times every 20 minutes if they have not already vomited. It is important to note that inducing vomiting may not be safe for all dogs, especially if they have certain health conditions (e.g. if your dog has a respiratory condition or has already vomited). Be sure to consult with a veterinarian before administering hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting.

* Contact poison control: If you believe your dog has eaten a large amount of sheetrock, it is important to get expert advice from poison control. You can contact the Pet Poison Helpline at 1-800-213-6680 or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at 1-888-426-4435.

* Watch for signs of complications: If your dog ingests sheetrock, they may develop complications, such as vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, dehydration, and electrolyte abnormalities. If you notice any of these signs, it is important to take your dog to the veterinarian as soon as possible.
